Course Description

Math III progresses from the standards learned in Math I and Math II. In addition to these standards, Math III extends to include algebraic concepts such as: inverse functions, polynomial functions, rational functions, trigonometric functions and the unit circle. Math III also includes the geometric concepts of parallelograms, triangles, and circles.

A TI-84 CE+ graphing calculator is highly suggested.  They can be purchased for around $100 new and much less if bought used. This calculator will be used through every math course taken from now through college.

If you are unable to purchase a graphing calculator, there will be one provided for use during class, but it may not be taken home.

 

Expectations

Students are expected to master the content as well as demonstrate the ability to formulate to solve problems, as well as express themselves through occasional writing assignments.  Students will explore topics in depth, while participating in discussions, presentations and investigations on topics. Students are expected to be self-directed and reflective learners who will be asked to create questions, problem solve, and work collaboratively to gain knowledge on topics. Thoughtful and meaningful work that challenges students to demonstrate higher order and critical thinking skills will be the distinguishing feature of the Math III Honors experience.

Due to the nature of the Early College program, students will be  expected to demonstrate maturity in discussions and debates, as well as respect for the thoughts and ideas of others. Classes will be free from intimidation and stereotyping so that all students can feel safe in sharing thoughts and opinions on topics.

 

Attendance

Being successful in Math III means being present! Class will continue if you are absent and it is your responsibility to make up all assignments, quizzes, and tests in a timely manner. If you are absent on a test day, then you will be required to make up the test you missed the day you return to class. If you are absent the day prior to a test, you will be required to take the test the day you return to class, unless new material was covered the day you were absent. Check Canvas for missed work.

 

Grading

For Major and Minor Assignments (Tests and Quizzes), students will be graded on mastery of standards taught in class, this is referred to as Standards Based Grading. Grades listed in PowerSchool will be given for individual learning targets (not a cumulative test grade).  This means that students will receive several grades per test, one for each learning target assessed on the test.  Quizzes will be graded the same way, with less learning targets assessed. Students and parents/guardians should always look to PowerSchool for their course grade. Canvas will not accurately calculate grades.

 

The following grading scale is used for all quizzes and tests:

6  (100%) – You have mastered the concept and have explained thoughts thoroughly.

5 (90%) – You definitely understand the concept, but made minimal mistakes.

4 (80%) – You understand the concept, but are missing skills (shown work).

3 (70%) – You mostly got it, but you are still stuck on some parts.

2 (60%) – You have an idea of what to do, but still need a lot of work.

1 (50%) – You tried the skill but it wasn’t on the right track.  Ask for help!

0 – You left the question blank…ask for help right now!!

Partial Credit will be given, so if a student receives a 0%, then it means they did not do the assignment, the test question was left blank, or there was no indication in the answer that the student understood the concept.

 

Late Work will be accepted, but at a cost. Late assignments will be deducted by 10% for each day they are late. Be sure to pay extra close attention to due dates in class and on Canvas.

 

Homework will be assigned regularly and is due the next day. If you are absent, I will check it when you return. You are not required to make-up homework from a day you were absent.  No late homework assignments will be accepted.

 

Reassessments will be available after each unit test for students who did not master the concepts. 

Requirements for Reassessments:

1) Student must complete test corrections and correctly fill out a test correction form.

2) Student must complete ALL homework for that unit.

3) Student must meet with Mrs. Greer for remediation

4) Student must schedule time with Mrs. Greer to complete reassessment.

5) Reassessment grades replace original, regardless of outcome.

 

 

Semester Grading 
Quarter 1: 40%     Quarter 2: 40%. End of Course Exam (required): 20%

Quarter Grading              Major Assessments – 60%   Minor Assessments – 40%

 

Final Exam EOC given by the state.  No exemptions allowed.  4 hours testing time, max.  60 questions comprised of multiple choice, numerical response, and technology-enhanced.  Calculator allowed.

 

Classroom Policies and Rules

  1. Be Prompt
    * Be ready to work when the bell rings. 
  2. Be Prepared
    * This means that your pencil should be sharpened, your homework out, and you are beginning to work on the warm up activity.
  3. Be Polite
    * Follow directions the first time.
    * No teasing, cussing, or horseplay in class.
    * Do not talk when the teacher is talking.
    * Respect yourself, others and school property

 

In our class, there really is only ONE rule: If you are a disruption to someone else’s learning

then you will be dismissed.

A Few Notes

  • Bring all necessary materials to class EVERYDAY, including notebook, pencils, paper, GREAT attitude and be ready to work.
  • My desk, filing cabinets, supply closet, etc. are off limits to students.  Please ask for needed materials.  RESPECT the property of others (this includes me and your classmates)
  • YOU are responsible for make-up work when you have been absent.  If you have questions about missed work or a specific assignment, see a classmate or me at appropriate times.
  • I will dismiss class.  There will be no congregating at the door. You are to remain in your seats until dismissed.
  • Disruptions will not be tolerated.  Please raise your hand before speaking and before leaving your seat.
  • If you have any problems or questions, please feel free to come to me.  I am here to help you succeed.
  • There is no cell phone or headphone/earbud use allowed in class.

 

How to Study

  1. Start with homework daily. This lets you know right away if you understand the topic.
  2. Get help when you don’t understand the topic.
  3. Pay attention – I often tell you the examples that we do in class that are very similar to test problems.
  4. Keep up with the vocabulary and formulas – study them daily.  These are the basics and you cannot do the problem without them.
  5. Complete review activities in class and for homework.
  6. Completely review all quizzes – and get help during Wildcat if you need to.
  7. REWORK problems until you get them right without struggling through the problems.  Only study problems you have correct answers to so you can check them.
