Driver Education
Please read the following information completely before contacting the school regarding Driver Education classes and BTW (behind the wheel).
- Classes are offered through Davidson Early College High School for students of DECHS, Homeschool settings, and private schools. Registration for Homeschool and Private school students is completed by contacting Mr. Joe Davis at [email protected] once the class registration window is open for the posted class. DECHS students will be contacted by school staff prior to registering for a class.
- Students must be 14.5 no later than the first day of class. This is a NC law and the NC DMV sets the requirements. Falsifying DOB will result in removal from the class without refund.
- Driver Education costs $65 through DCS. Payment information will be shared once the registration window is closed. DECHS students will use School Cash Online and Homeschool and Private school students will need to pay at DECHS to the school treasurer. Cash is preferred.
- Classes meet in the Reich Building on the Davidson-Davie Community College campus. The room number will be shared once the class is set.
- Class dates and times posted are always subject to change based on school schedules and inclement weather, but usually don’t change much except in the Winter months.
- The classroom portion is a required 30 hour course that students must complete (along with all the assigned work) before they can be considered for the BTW/Driving portion. Students fail the classroom portion more than the BTW. It is the students’ responsibility to show their maturity and seriousness regarding getting their NC Driver’s Permit.
- Driver Education Class and Behind the Wheel Training Information
- Students may miss three (3) hours of class time, but will have to make up all time and work missed. The make up session(s) will be announced and students reminded during the class. It is usually the next day or two after the class has completed the original 30 hours.
- BTW/Driving is scheduled by birthdate where the oldest are given preference and we try to schedule them first. Student and parent afterschool schedules can cause this to be delayed. Please do not ask about when you or your student will drive. We do our best to stay ahead and drive students within three weeks of their birthday, but there are times when we cannot have you or your student completed by their 15 th birthday.
- BTW/Driving for Homeschool and Private school students will be completed through the public high school where you or your student would attend based on the home address. Student drop off and pick up information will be shared by the lead instructor of the school scheduling the BTW.
We look forward to you or your student completing Driver Education through the Davidson County Schools/DECHS.
